LIttle Birdie
Erica Sanders grew up in the riverside village of Warrandyte, just out
of Melbourne. She went to school at an even smaller village
further from the city at Kangaroo Ground. Her works reference her
childhood imagining in the country – spring and summer landscapes and the animals that
inhabit them – and the wondrous events that might take place there.
Her first picture was a textile lion, Clarence, who was the main
character in many of the bed-time stories her father would make up for her.
Erica's love of textiles is expressed in her range of unique fabric-on-canvas collages offered by Kindergallery. The fabrics appearing in Erica's works come from a large collection which she has built up over many years, including retro and vintage pieces to the latest interior decorator fabrics, old clothes, bedspreads and table cloths. They are assembled onto canvas using a variety of glue techniques to produce a layered, tactile work.
The source of Erica's stories is Little Birdie, who constantly recounts
tales to Erica of her flights through those childhood summer landscapes.
Sometimes you might even see Little Birdie in the pictures themselves...
